📝 Ingredients
Here's what you will need to make my Puff Pastry Cinnamon Twists:
Puff Pastry - I use ready rolled puff pastry to make things super simple. If you're using frozen one, you will need to defrost it first.
These days most puff pastries here in the UK are vegan unless they specifically state "all butter".
There is also gluten-free alternative for those of you who need it.
Vegan Butter - I use Flora Plant block butter but Naturli or any other plant butter of your choice will do.
Addition of butter makes these even more special and indulgent plus it acts as glue for sugar and cinnamon.
Brown Sugar - It's perfect here because of its sticky nature.
Cinnamon - They wouldn't be puff pastry cinnamon twists without cinnamon after all.
🔪 Instructions
Ingredient quantities & detailed instructions to be found in recipe card at the bottom of the post.
Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas Mark 4.
Take puff pastry out of the fridge and let it sit for 10-15 minutes before unrolling it to make it less likely to crack.
Once unrolled, using knife gently spread butter all over the pastry.
Next, sprinkle sugar all over buttered pastry and smooth it down with the back of the spoon.
Sprinkle cinnamon over the sugar and again, smooth it down with the back of the spoon.
Next, fold one of the short sides of the pastry over so that it's folded in half. Cut it into 12 equal size strips.
Twist each puff pastry strip few times and squeeze the open end gently to make it stick. Repeat with remaining strips.
Place on the lined baking sheet and bake in preheated oven for 17-20 minutes or until nicely golden and crisp.
Transfer onto cooling rack to cool slightly, sprinkle with icing sugar (if you want) and enjoy!
🥡 Storing
Storing: Cinnamon twists are absolutely the best fresh out of the oven but they can be stored in the airtight container for 3-4 days.
Reheat: You can always reheat them gently to give them back that freshly baked vibe.
They will take approx. 3 minutes in the hot oven or 3 minutes at 170C/338F in the air fryer.
Few seconds in the microwave will bring them back to life too but they will be softer and not crispy (still yummy though).
Freeze: Both baked and unbaked twists freeze beautifully.
Open freeze them on a baking tray for couple of hours and once frozen solid transfer to freezer friendly bag or container to save some space.
Unbaked twists can be baked from frozen adding few more minutes to baking time.
Baked ones you can defrost on the counter for an hour or so and then warm up in the oven or the air fryer.
💭 Pro Tips
- Take puff pastry out of the fridge about 10-15 minutes in advance. It will be less likely to crack.
- Further to the above, don't leave it out sitting on the counter for longer than that as it will warm up too much and start getting sticky.
- Make sure to watch your twists when in the oven as you want them baked but not burned. Appliances differ so it's wise to keep an eye on your bakes.
- Use soft(ish) butter that will spread without tearing the pastry but at the same time doesn't run.
- Feel free to vary your cinnamon twist by adding some yummy extras. See -Variations below for ideas.
📖 Variations
Add some finely chopped dried fruit of your choice. Make sure to press it gently onto the pastry to try and keep it in place.
Sprinkle ½-1 teaspoon ground cardamom. You can leave the quantity of cinnamon as is or reduce it slightly to accommodate cardamom.
Add some small dark chocolate drops or finely chopped dark chocolate for chocolatey vibe.
Grate over some orange zest. It goes so well with cinnamon.
Sprinkle over really finely chopped nuts.
Once baked, dip both ends of the twists in melted dark chocolate and sprinkle over some finely chopped nuts.
🍴 Serving suggestions
My favourite way of serving them is super simply, gently dusted with some icing sugar and accompanied by lovely cup of coffee.
Occasionally, my kids love dunking them in chocolate sauce as you would churros. Who said you can't play with your food!
